I frequently have problems with ingrown toenails so I am no stranger to the red swelling. I usually pull the nail off with pliers and rub a bit of salt on it, the nail grows back within a week and the salt helps the healing.

Yes you have an ingrown toenail. Buy some "Vicks Vapor Rub" Use it everyday until you see a change. The red part is due to infection.

When is a toenail ingrown?

You can tell when a toenail is ingrown when it is red and hurts. The nail may not hurt until youtouch it, and this is still a sign your nail is ingrown. (regular toenails are not red and do not hurt! )If you are having this problem, do not touh it!That is the worst thing you can do. Instead, go to a doctor and hae him/her remove it properly with clean tools... It is better to catch an ingrown early with little pain then bring it to the doctors later when it becomes infected and much more painful. (and trust me they are very painful and gross... )I am twelve years old, and i have had more than 15 bad ingrown toenails in my life. Every time, i am scared and i don't tell anyne about it until i cannot stand the ppain anymore, then i go to the docotrs and everythingis solved. (:

Simple and Successful Treatment Of an Ingrown Toenail?

Ingrown toenails are common in adults. The toenail that is usually affected is the big toe, but it can happen with any toe. The first signs are pain and redness where a sharp edge of the nail has started growing into the skin. If left untreated, an infection can occur, which is evident with light skin surrounded by red skin, swelling and possibly a fever. Once it has reached this point, professional medical treatment is necessary. In the early stages of an ingrown toenail, the condition can easily be healed with simple home-care. Soak the foot 3 to 4 times a day in warm water for fifteen minutes. The goal is to guide the toenail away from the skin and force it to grow in a different direction. After soaking, roll a small piece of gauze or cotton between your fingers to make a small wick. Waxed dental floss may also be used. Lift up the corner of the toenail that is pushing into the skin and place the wick between the nail and skin. Although painful, this is necessary to stop the toenail from growing in further. Finish each soaking with a new wick and try to push it in a little further. Apply a topical antibiotic ointment and protect the nail area by keeping it dry with a bandage or white socks. The dyes in colored socks may seep into the wound and cause more problems. Wear loose, comfortable shoes. If possible, wear open-toed sandals. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen and continue treatment until pain and inflammation subsides. If there is no improvement after 3 days, consult your doctor. For people who have diabetes, nerve damage or poor circulation, it is critical that only professional treatment be obtained. Doctors may prescribe an antibiotic or perform an in-office procedure by removing part of the nail. The best scenario is preventing ingrown toenails altogether. Cut toenails in a straight line, not rounded and not too short. Wear proper-fitting shoes, not high-heels, too tight or loose shoes. Taking these precautions will lessen the chances of ever having to suffer with an ingrown toenail again.

What is the difference between an ingrown hair and a boil?

An ingrown hair can be differenciated from a boil because it is a smaller red bump with a hair in it, and usually doesnt inflame as big as a boil. A boil gets very red and hurts to touch it may look like an ingrown hair in the first stages but it gets very big and soon drains pus and blood. They sometimes get a purplish tint or discoloration rather than just red.

How do you get your ingrown toenail out?

If your ingrown teonail is red and swollen, then go to a doctor. They will numb your toe with a small needle and get the ingrown toenail out. The needle is the worst part if this "surgery".However, if your ingrown toenail is not red and swollen, you can probadly get needle nose nail clippers and dig it out. This will be somewhat painful and may grow back worse. From experience, i would definatly go to the doctor the first time and just get it over with so i know it will not grow back.
