Your question did not state on what type of 1972 vehicle the subject throttle cable is attached. Throttle cables are used on lawnmowers, motorcycles, automobiles, boats, aircraft, etc. Similar cables are even used on non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles [shift cables and brake cables for example].

Therefore this answer will be generic, and generally, since "a rose is a rose," and most throttle cables are very much the same, and with slight variation all are adjusted similarly.

First, it is necessary to understand how such a cable works [throttle or not]. Almost universally, throttle cables are of the "push-pull" type, composed of two cables, an outer and and inner cable.

To visualize this, think of a large soda straw as the outer cable, and a smaller diameter straw as the inner cable, with the inner straw being slightly longer than the outer, allowing you to push or pull on one of the exposed ends of the longer inner straw, resulting in the other end moving in and out of the outer straw.

This principle allows us to mechanically transfer motion from where we are to another location.

Generally, throttle cables consist of two cables, an outer cable, usually sprially wound single strand wire[looking much like an unstretched spring], and an inner cable, either a single solid wire, or alternatively, a more flexible inner cable made up of several strands of wire twisted much like rope.

For this discussion, I'll use the simplest application, an ordinary lawn mower. The outer cable is rigidly attached at both ends [to or near the carburetor and to the throttle lever assemble on the mower handle close to the operator], to prevent movement.

The inner cable is attached to the throttle levernear the upper end of the mower's handle. This is what the operator manually moves to change the carburetor throttle plate setting, and thus the power output level of the engine.

The other end of the inner cable is attached to a lever which is attached to and moves the throttle plate inside the carburetor.

On lawnmowers, this cable is adjusted by loosening a screw on a small "locking/pinch clamp," at or near the carburetor, which releases the outer cable, allowing it to be moved closer to, or farther from the carburetor.

Since the outer and inner cables are fixed at the upper end, moving the outer cable at the lower end results in the inner cable lower end [attached to the carburetor throttle lever arm] being moved in direct proportion to the free end of the outer cable.

Basically, it is exactly the same for any other vehicle throttle cable. The only difference would be the sophistication of the adjustment device and the locking device.

Usually, on automobiles the throttle cable adjustment is on the carburetor, or for fuel injected vehicles, on the "throttle body" on the air induction chamber/box, usually mounted on or near the top of the engine.

If you trace the throttle cable from where it enters the engine compartment, the adjusting mechanism is usually at the very end of the outer cable, most often on the throttle body between the air cleaner and the air induction box [looks sort of like a large intake manifold].

The adjustment is usually a matter of loosening the locking device, and using a nut [or two nuts] on a threaded tube at the end of the outer cable, to move the outer cable end closer to or farther away from the carburetor or throttle body. Once the adjustment is properly set, retighten and thereby lock in the new adjustment setting.

Hopefully this helps you to understand and accomplish adjustment of your vehicle's throttle.j3h.

You have to play Detective and maybe have a few tools to fit what holds the cable and controls etc.

You just got to look at it totally and see how and where it goes and how it's attached here and there. Someone put it there. A factory service manual for your machine might show you how to do it but they are sometimes hard to come by. A new exact part cable would be helpful tho others types could be used to do the same work. It's a matter of looking for what does what and how does, or did it do it. Fix it!

You remove the old ones (one end from the carb and the other from throttle grip). You install the new ones in the same fashion you took the old ones off.
