Vapor lock was an issue with some vehicles with a carburetor. Assuming the fuel filter has been replaced recently, next time it acts up spray some starting fluid or carb cleaner into the throttle body then try to start it and see what the results are. If it temporarily runs you have a fuel delivery problem. Have a fuel pressure and volume test done. If there is no attempt to run I suspect a spark problem.
