Depends on what exactly you're going for. If you're going for a Class C, Class B, or Class A with a "no tractor-trailers" restriction, and you can find a company which will give you on-the-job training, then you would get a copy of the CDL handbook and study it. Once you've done that, you'd take the written tests for General Knowledge, Air Brakes (if applicable), Combination Vehicles (for Class A), and any endorsements you might be required to have (hazmat, tanker, passenger, etc.). Then you'd have a learner's permit, and could train on-the-job until you were ready for the driving test at the DMV (in which case, you would be responsible for providing a test vehicle, which your company may or may not do).
If you want to get into driving tractor-trailers, you really need to go to a truck driving school.
