Weight loss is all about tracking calorie consumption so if you simply monitor his/her calories for them and not let them consume more than they are supposed to, they can lose weight.

How you achieve it depends on the age of the child, but let's assume this is a child between the ages of 4 and 10. First, children love sweet things because they are full of energy-creating carbs. Little kids are growing not only in size but also in motor coordination and strength at this time and they can use up the carbs--provided they go out and play exercise-like games. Kids at that age love things like swings, jumping rope, playing catch, and climbing all over stuff.

So the first thing you need to do is get the kid outside and playing. Play with them too! The exercise is not going to kill you. If the child enjoys playing with you, they will learn how to enjoy playing, period. If it's raining, grab an umbrella and go for a walk in the rain with your child, provided there's no lightning. Any exercise is better than no exercise.

Second, you need to do is provide your child with delicious raw fruits to snack on instead of candy or pastries. Make it fun for them to learn which fruits they like best. You might even find out they like snacking on vegetables too (mine absolutely go nuts over green beans, of all things). Many fruits and vegetables contain trace minerals that are needed by their bodies to form correctly; so this not only teaches them good eating habits but it helps them later on to have stronger bodies in the first place.
