When first born, it is normal for the top of a puppy's head to be soft. This is called the soft spot or fontanelle and is where the bones of the skull have not yet fused to facilitate the birthing process. Over the next few weeks the soft spot should harden and fuse.
I banged the top of my head on that soft spot (I think it was there at least) on the top of my footboard on my bed and it hurt A LOT (well for ten minutes), should I be worried?
The soft spots are called fontanelles. They occur at the fibrous sutures (joints) between the plates of the skull, and usually fuse with bone (ossify) within the first two years after birth. The spacing between the skull plates is necessary for proper expansion as the brain grows.
The one on the top of the head is called the anterior fontanelle and the one at the back is called posterior fontanelle
Firstly, most people are unaware that babies actually have a baby soft spot on the top of the head which is diamond or kite shaped (anterior fontanel) and another one at the back of the head which is triangular (posterior fontanel).A newborn's soft spot exists where the skull has not completely closed at birth. The anterior fontanel is generally about two inches wide and can remain to some degree until the baby is around eighteen months of age. The posterior fontanel is only half an inch wide and closes relatively quickly between the ages of six to twelve weeks.Essentially, the soft spots are an area of an infant's head where the skull plates have not yet formed together to protect the brain.the soft spot in the babies head where the skull is not fully developed.
Normally, as an infant, the soft-spot on the head is an opening between the skull plates that allows the skull to flex during birth. However, this normally closes up at 18 months old, so it is important to check with the doctor, as this could become an issue.
they are both intende to protect your brain from impact's and are both hard except for babies because they usually have a soft spot on the top of their head for a length of time after they are born.
The soft spots are known as fontanelles. There are two of them and they may vary in size a little bit. The one at the back of the head is usually smaller than the other and triangular in shape. This is known as the posterior fontanelle. The other one is larger and is on the top of the head. It is diamond or kite shaped and is known as the anterior fontanelle.

This is called the Fontanelle and is a gap in the bones of the top of the skull. When a baby passes through the birth canal the skull bones overlap each other like rose petals,During early life the skull bones unite along sutures and the fontanelle usually closes completely. You may be a rare case of this not completely finishing. The brain is protected by a tough membrane called the Dura with a layer of skin on top. It is unlikely to give you trouble but I would mention it to a medic next time you visit .
The anterior fontanel
The term strawberry is used in the medical field by Doctors to describe the coloring of the soft spot at the top of a childs head. This can last some times from newbornto several years old.
