There is two ways to activate themes in iMovie.
The first way is to do it when you open a new project. In the new project window select a theme by clicking on one of the big thumbnails.
If you already have an existing project go to the T , or transition tab and right under it you will see a button that says "Set Theme". Click it. Then do the step in the second sentence of the first way.
There is also a youtube tutorial on how to do this in the "Sources and related links".
This will vary depending on the version of iMovie you are using. The general editing menu (where you can edit titles, add video effects, etc.) should be a prominent tab labeled Editing as soon as you open up a blank iMovie screen.

To share a movie created in iMovie: From the iMovie Share menu select iDVD. Your project will be passed to iDVD where you can select a theme for your menu etc. When you have set up your DVD select Burn DVD... from the file menu. Once the DVD is created it can be played anywhere that plays DVD - computers, TV/DVD Player etc. If it is only a short movie one of the other options from the iMovie Share menu will probably suffice. A small movie can be emailed, burnt to a disc and shared with other computers, or posted directly to a YouTube account. The iMovie software itself will not work on a Windows computer.
