How do you get an engine out?

In general, to pull an engine out of a car, you can follow a basic process listed below:

1. Disconnect and remove the battery.

2. Disconnect any wires you can.

3. Disconnect the fuel line (there will still be pressure in the line so don't let gas spray in your eyes.)

4. Disconnect the throttle cable.

5. Disconnect radiator hoses and remove the radiator.

6. Disconnect the air intake and remove if possible.

7. Disconnect the A/C system if applicable.

8. Disconnect the exhaust manifolds.

9. Disconnect the Power Steering pump.

10. Disconnect the transmission from the engine block.

11. You may want to remove the hood of the car.

12. Attach lifting chains to the engine block crossing from the front to the back with heavy duty bolts.

13. Move your cherry-picker/engine cradle in place and put slight tension on the chains by raising it slightly.

14. Remove all bolts from the motor mounts.

15. Begin to slowly lift the engine out while continually checking for anything you may have left attached.

This is the basic idea behind removing an engine. You should do a little research on your particular make and model before diving into it. Try to get a shop manual for your car or look for forums where other people have pulled an engine from the same car. Older cars are much less complex to pull an engine from. If you have a newer model you should really do your research before diving into it. If you plan on putting the engine back in, be sure to document every step with pictures and a list of procedures. Mark wires with corresponding numbered or colored tape to make the installation much smoother. Also, be sure to collect any fluids lost during the process and dispose of them properly, not in the trash, grass, or down the drain.
