Take the Uptown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line), or the Uptown 2 late nights, from Canal Street (at Varick Street) or Houston Street (on Varick Street between King and Houston Streets) to 14th Street (at 7th Avenue).

Walk through the tunnel that connects the 14th Street Station-7th Avenue Station on the 1-2-3 to the 14th Street-6th Avenue Station.

At the 14th Street-6th Avenue Station, transfer to the Brooklyn-bound L train (the grey line) to Bedford Avenue. Bedford Avenue is the first stop in Brooklyn. It's the next stop after 14th Street-1st Avenue.

It's very, very difficult to provide useful directions, without knowing where on Bedford Avenue you're going to, not to mention where on 48th Street you're coming from. Bedford Avenue is the longest street in Brooklyn. It's 10.2 miles long. And 48th Street is about 2 miles long.

The subway route will be completely different, depending on 1) what subway line is closest to your destination, and 2) what subway line is closest to your starting point. Six subway lines (14 different trains) stop at 42nd Street. And almost every subway line stops close to Bedford Avenue at some point in its 10-mile path.

In short, I recommend asking another question, this time providing: 1) the exact address or cross street on Bedford Avenue (or at the very least, the neighborhood), and 2) the cross street on 48th Street that you're coming from.

However, if you happen to be heading to Bedford Avenue in the Williamsburg neighborhood, then you can take the L train (the grey line) to Bedford Avenue (at North 7 Street). The Lruns east/west across 14th Street and then out to Brooklyn. To get to the L train, you can take the:

Downtown A or C trains (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal to 14th Street (at 8th Avenue) and transfer there to the L.

Downtown 2 or 3 express trains (of the 1-2-3, the red line), 2 stops, from 42nd Street-Times Square (at 7th Avenue) to 14th Street (at 7th Avenue), and transfer there to the L.

Downtown Q express train (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line), 3 stops, from 49th Street (at 7th Avenue) to 14th Street-Union Square, and transfer there to the L. Late nights and weekends, when the Q skips the 49th Street stop, you can instead board it at 42nd-Times Square.

Downtown F or M trains (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) from 47th-50th Street-Rockefeller Center (at 6th Avenue) to 14th Street (at 6th Avenue) and transfer there to the L. The L doesn't stop at 14th Street-6th Avenue, but there's a tunnel connecting the 14th Street-6th Avenue station to the 14th Street-7th Avenue station. So you'll be transferring to the L at 14th Street-7th Avenue.

Downtown 4 or 5 express trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), 1 stop, from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station (at Park/Lexington Avenues) to 14th Street-Union Square, and transfer there to the L.

Otherwise, the best I can say is to take the G train. It roughly (very roughly) follows Bedford Avenue's path. It also has a station that is actually ON Bedford Avenue (not just near it): the Bedford-Nostrand Avenues station (at Lafayette Avenue, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood).

Take the Uptown 7 train (the purple line) from 42nd Street-Times Square (at 7th Avenue), 42nd Street-Bryant Park (at 5th/6th Avenues), or 42nd Street-Grand Central Station (at Park/Lexington) to Court Square in Queens.

Transfer at Court Square to the G train. Court Square is the beginning of the G line.
