The best option would be a physiotherapist. They will be able to massage the knots out - but even an inexpert massage will help. To massage it out, locate the knot on your back. It will be a small ball about the size of your thumb. Circle the knot firmly - it should be slightly painful to the person. Work each knot for a minute, then move on. Do each knot over twice. Swimming is also good exercise for the condition as it "works" these muscles. Also try heat pads to lessen tightness in the muscles. And a cream like Voltaren will reduce swelling. It should take about a week to make a noticible difference if the knots are bad and about 4 weeks to completely disappear. To stop the knots reoccurring or getting worse, examine your lifestyle for the cause of the knots. Is it the position you sleep in? Is it stress? Is it the way you sit at work?

Laying flat on your back, then bringing your knees up to your chest and pulling them in. First one leg at a time, then both. Spend five minutes doing this twice a day and you'll see serious improvement. Also, look into a better bed.

Apply heat, if possible, or soak in a hot bath first. Then apply steady, and firm pressure to the specific "trigger point(s)" related to area of pain, until area is relaxed or no longer feels tight. This may have to be repeated depending on the severity of knot. Some basic things around the home may be used as tools to apply pressure. I lay on a rolling pin, soft ball, tennis ball. A diagram of the muscular anatomy and trigger points are required/useful, which allows a visual of the muscle layout.

Usually it's good to go to a masseuse or a masseur to get a massage. They work on your back muscles to help get them loose again. If you can't afford to go to a masseuse or masseur, try getting a family member or good friend to help by working and digging into the tangled muscle by massaging it. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, try going to your local Walmart or other multi-item supply store and look for a massager. They are usually in the bath & body section or you can try looking in the electronics department. I've had some back trouble of my own. lol. Best of luck!

Why do you have knots in your back?

Knots are areas of muscle that are in contraction or spasm. You can get them from overworking a muscle in your back. You can also get them from overstretching a muscle. This is probably the most common cause since so many of us have failing posture and this causes back muscles to be stretched too much. Muscles also need sufficient minerals and water to function well and not create knots.
