Click on the picture leading to the overview of your island, then click on the picture on the island that looks like a pile of logs. You will then see a slider that should be on 0, slide that up half way or 3/4 of the way and press the confirm button.
To collect Wood on Ikariam, choose one of your cities with the select menu in the menu bar, and click on the "View island" button.
Then select the lumberjack icon on the island view page.
You can now affect as many workers as you want to work in the lumbermill.
The level of the lumbermill defines the maximum workers you can put into it.
You can't affect more workers than inhabitants in your city.
The quickest way to get "free wood" or any resource is to send about 500 ballista and 500 transports in attack against a level 5 npc. This will get you a quick 180,000 wood if the level 5 npc hasn't been "farmed" or "attacked" in the past 8 hours. (It restocks completely every 8 hours). Depending on your academic studies levels in such things as Archery, and other areas you'll be able to gather resources from level 5 npc with less ballista and less transports without sustaining any loss.
You can also gather free resources from lower level npc (non-player cities)..the "barbarian cities" but level 5 is the last level you can hit with zero losses (by using the method described above).
Another way is to ask your alliance if anyone has wood to spare. Anyone in your alliance that is near enough can transport wood or other resources to you. However if they are not in your alliance, "transport" is not allowed to your city.
Another way is through the daily Wheel of Fortune spin, but that is random and not actually a value answer to your question.
To increase the wood you naturally produce, of course you would need more sawmills and higher level sawmills. Once you have a level 10 town hall you will have 40 spots out in front of your city. Since wood is always needed even after you're construction days are finished, (you'll need wood for making troops and for replacing archery towers in your wall defense after attacks). If you want to be pretty self supporting it is good to have maybe 8 level 9 sawmills and even capture a forest or two to have in your town hall /valleys list...as you will see their production bonus listed in the town hall/production tab.
To temporarily increase your wood production, under your avatar picture there is a "my items" button, if you click that and look at the "produce" tab and see if you have a saw or an item that will temporarily increase your production of wood.
click on the city tab then select an empty building spot and the select lumber mill.
TIP:Build more lumber mills or upgrade them for more wood income.
