You don't really get over your dog dying. It gets easier every day though. You think about them less and less as each day goes by, but the pain is always there when you do think about them. It's been 3 years since I lost my first dog - and I still cry when I really think about her. Just do me a favor, don't go out and buy another dog right away. Some people get over the "rebound" animal after a while, and it's not fair to the new dog.

Don't think about it. Move on. Maybe even get another dog! Life goes on. ♥♥♥ How about an answer that may actually help???? The death of a loved animal, while less tragic than that of a loved human, shares the same stresses and debilitating effects. While they may be less severe, they are no less real. Most people deal with it in the same manner as with a significant human loss. Possibly join a group that helps dogs (humane society, Best Friends, etc). Donate time, money, or supplies to the local animal shelter. Communicate online with people who are experiencing the same loss. Recall the wonderful things about your dog, and do this with others who knew your dog, if possible. And, yes, consider getting a new dog very soon. The worst thing I ever did was wait two years to get a new dog. The best thing I ever did was get a new puppy within two weeks after the loss of my last best friend.

It takes a lot of time, but time really does heal all wounds. Let yourself take all the time you need to grieve. The loss of a beloved pet can be even worse than the loss of a person, because you can often feel the 'guilt' associated with the fact that you could not talk to your dog, nor could your dog communicate its feelings to you as a human could. But trust that your dog loved you just as much as you loved it. Do not let anyone talk you into immediately "replacing" your lost dog with a new puppy. No other dog will ever take the place of that one special dog, because every dog is unique and irreplaceable. In time, you might want to adopt another dog, but don't think that it will ever fill the void left by the one that died. That one will always hold a special place in your heart.

This is a very good question and the only answer is time. And we don't want to hear that because who wants to bear the pain during the "time" period. I don't think you ever get over the loss of a very beloved pet. It hurts a lot. You miss them so much that you would give anything just to see them or touch them once again. That pain is not any fun, hurts very deeply. I am still missing my Dandee, she was my best friend and meant so much to me. There are support groups that you can join to help you out with the loss of your pet. Go to the Rainbow site on the web or ask your local Veterinarian for the nearest support group. A lot of folks don't truly understand the depth of the pain. It is as if you lost a part of your family. Just know that other people out there do understand and are going through the same type of pain you are. Find a Support Group.

If you are a young person, go to your parents or someone who has lost a pet in the past to find support or talk to your Veterinarian & maybe he or she can offer you some support. Do go to the Rainbow site on the internet.

Try and think about how it is in a better place, even though you miss them and they miss you. Reflect on the good times you had together and don't think of how or where they died. My cat was only 1 when he died, he was hit by a car, amd I still can hardly get over it, because he was my best friend. I still feel him cuddling next to me in my arms sometimes, and I get Geary eyed, but I did some of these things, and it made me feel better. Also I went on the website 'petloss' (see link) and looked at the Rainbow Bridge and they tell you what will happen to your cat to assure you it is happy. I know getting over losing your pet is very hard, but there are ways to get through it.

Just think that he is not in pain anymore and he is in a good place, watching over you.

There is no simple direct answer to that. Losing a pet sucks big time. We all grieve differently. I'm sorry for your loss, and remember, your dog will alwsys be in your heart.
