It is not completely true, however after expiring the trial version you will be able to open your iwork document but can't edit it. In this situation for the iWork recovery you need to upgrade your iWork.
iWork 09 is installed into it's own iWork 09 folder in the Applications folder. It should not touch an iWork 08 installation.
Nope....I've been hoping for it to be free with a Mac, but it's part of iWork, not iLife. It can be purchased in the Mac App Store for $19.99...however there is a free 30-day trial which you can download. Hope that helps.
