Most pump impellers rotate off in the opposite direction as turning under power. So rotate the impeller anti-clockwise to loosen it. The real trick is to grasp the impeller hard enough to turn it without warping or bending it. There is almost always a screwdriver slot at the other end of the shaft to hold it from rotating as you remove the impeller.

You don't wire anything. the water pump is mechanical , consisting of a rubber impeller /impeller housing and copper tube running from the impeller housing to the engine block. The drive shaft runs from the gearcase through the impeller/impeller housing to the engine block allowing the intake of water to match the engine RPMs. if the water pump does not work it is most likely that the rubber fins broke off (extremely common for all outboards that are water cooled)

Replace the seal assembly. Your local pool store should have them in stock. you'll have to remove the strainer basket to get to the impeller. In the center, on the shaft, it is slotted to accept a 7/16" wrench. Place a wrench on the shaft and twist off the impeller. Replace the seal assembly and put back together.

How do you change a water pump on a 1995 Suzuki outboard jet motor 140HP?
The lower unit comes apart the same as if it had a prop. The water pump is in the same location as the standard lower unit prop assembly. The only difference on the jet is, you do not have to disconnect the shift lever, because it is not used on the inside of the lower unit. Remove the shift cable on the outside of the pump unit. Remove the bolts on the upper part of the jet pump that connects the unit to the mid portion of the lower section. The pump unit is then removed from the motor along with the pump drive shaft as one unit. The pump housing is located on the top of the pump unit. Unbolt the pump housing from the lower unit and slide the housing and impeller off the shaft. Be careful not to lose the key that secures the impeller to the shaft (if used). Most kits include a new key, lower plate, housing and impeller. Be sure to fold the rubber impeller in the same direction as the original impeller. It is a good practice to apply a small amount of rubber safe lubricant to the housing when the impeller is installed to prevent a "dry fire" of the impeller when first started. Assembly is just the opposite of the removal.

I had to cut the soft brass ring with an oscillating tool. A paint can opener also helped in the removal.

My bet is on the clogged filter! Well, the filter, the large tank, would never have aburnt smell. Ya gotta be talkin' about the pump motor. Turn off the motor, get down and sniff towards the back side of the motor being careful not to put your hand on the motor as it may be hot to the touch. If the motor smells like burning wires then the motor may be getting ready to crash. How old is the motor? Did you empty the pump basket after vacuuming? A dirty filter usually will not cause the motor to burn.
