This answer relates to the Maine lobster. This is the lobster that has two big claws and lives around the north Atlantic off the coasts of Maine and Nova Scotia. This does NOT pertain to the spiny lobster with no claws.
Lobsters are caught through hard work! lobster traps are set on the bottom of the ocean and left for usually 24-72 hours, depending on where the lobsters are being fished.
lobsters are usually fished in water depths ranging from 1-2 fathoms up to 100-150 fathoms (usually).
Anyway, once on the desired ocean ground; bait is placed inside of a trap to entice or attract lobster and catch the lobster. the traps are designed so the lobster can crawl in; but usually not crawl out.
traps can be single gear (one trap) or a string or trawl of traps containing up to 20 traps tied together. Ballons or bouys on the surface of the water indicate where the traps are. These ballons are tied to the traps and anchors that hold them to the ocean floor.
As mentioned; lobster fishing is hard work. Weather and ocean conditions are usually not favorable. If anyone has seen the Deadliest Catch...it is similar to that in terms of working conditions. Of course, most boats are half the size or smaller..but in terms of waves and water and temperature (Nova Scotia winter season) they are very similar.
Getting the lobster out of the trap is a simple process. simply open the trap's door and pick them out by hand. In warmer weather when the lobsters are lively and numerous in the traps...this can be a fun and frantic process :)
