Go to your local Autozone, they will read the codes, and then clear the codes for you at no charge.

Some places will sell or let you rent an OBD-II engine code tool. You can read the codes and reset them. Some of the codes are GM proprietary, so the tool will just report a number without a description. You can get the description from the service manual, or maybe the dealer.

Or you could just unplug the battery for a few minutes if all you want to do is reset the codes/shut off the light. If you have corrected the problem the light will go off on its own. Oh, and you can just Google the codes.

There could be several reasons why a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am service engine light soon has come on. The engine may need a tune up, the timing belt may need changed, or even a bad fuel pump.

The "Service Engine" light is the computer's way of telling you that it has something to tell you. Connect a scanner and see what it says.
