The ancient Romans would instantly recognise IXL (50-11) as the equivalent of 39 because its an abridged version of XXXVIIII (39)

The rules governing the original Roman numeral system were changed during the Middle Ages and sill remain as they are today. The equivalent of 39 in Roman numerals today is XXXIX.
