Volvo heater relay93 Volvo 850 heater motor relay is on the heater box towards center of car. That is without the digital climate control. There are two relays side by side, my relay has bad points and a blue cover. The resistor pack could also be your problem, it is on/in the heater box also. The heater box is below the glove box in front of passengers knees. The Dealership refers to the resistor as a power unit (for auto climate control) systems. When this fails, the blower motor will not work. No heat or A/C. A different resistor is required for manual climate systems. To access this unit, you will need to remove the the glove box , the support bracket for S.R.S (passenger side) , and possibly the wire harness. There should be left of the blower motor, the resistor. New up to $300. salvage yard $6-25. Try Crazy rays
Check and change the relay
The fuse should be under the hood in the fuse panel it is #32 on the 97 850 sedan. blower speed 4 is on a separate fuse. I had the problem of speeds 1,2,3 not working and the culprit was the balast resistor. it is ceramic unlike the metal coils used in the American cars. the ceramic deteriorates and the wires break inside the resistor. see answer for ......Where is the air and heater blower relay located on a Volvo 850?.... to find out where the resistor is located.
There is a resistor pack under the dash next to the blower motor. I had the same problem and eventually the blower stopped all together. I was in no hurry to spend the $100+/- so I tried a lot of trouble shooting, but after talking with 2 Volvo Technicians they both told me that it was the resistor pack without looking at the car. Try looking on eeuroparts.com, $65 or $136 depending on whether or not you have electronic climate control.
The Volvo 850 does not have a non-interference engine. This means that if the timing belt breaks, then serious internal engine damage will inevitably occur.
Use only the weight recommended by Volvo and I doubt that they recommend 10w40.
