In Illinois, you don't - in such a case, support can be terminated prospectively but not retrospectively. It sounds as if the time to contest or appeal the order for support expired a long time ago. I suspect the law is similar in the other States.
from child support enforcement

If the child is an adult, no. If someone else has paid in your place he can sue you for the money. Otherwise, yes.
Absolutely ! The man shouldn't have paid anything towards the upkeep of the child if it wasn't his ! Legally - he can sue the mother for every payment he's made !

Child support only stops if: 1. When the child turns 18. 2. The child is legally adopted. or 3. If the child passes away. Unless the order specifically states otherwise. If you have an order, you will find the specifics in the order as to when CS will stop.
That is up to the child's parents to figure out. The father can do yard work and odd jobs to earn money to support his child. The mother can find part time jobs outside of school hours and they both can share child care. That is up to the child's parents to figure out.
