Carmine's is between 90th and 91st Streets. Take the Uptown 2 or 3 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 42nd Street-Times Square (between 7th Avenue and Broadway) to 96th Street (at Broadway). Then walk down Broadway.
At first glance, it seems to be a slightly shorter walk if you take the 1 train to 86th Street. But the 1 is a local train. It's 6 stops from Times Square to 86th Street. On the 2 and 3 express trains, it's only 2 stops from Times Square to 96th Street.
Also, there is an entrance/exit to the 96th Street stop between 93rd and 94th Streets. If you board the train at its back end, in the last 3 cars, you'll get off the train right at the 93rd-94th Street exit. That way, the walking distance will actually be shorter than from the 86th Street stop.
