Assuming there are at least four wires coming out of the tach, the green one goes to the negative side of the coil, the red one goes to a keyed power source, the black one goes to a ground and the last one is for illumination and can be connected to the dash light circuit.
84 and 85 cutlass's came with olds 307 small blocks. and others came with V-6's. now an olds 307 will slide right into a 72 cutlass (i have one also (: as long as the cutlass was a v-8 (olds 350 rocket and olds 455's were the v-8s that came in the 72's.) so yes the bolt pattern on the tranny and the engine mounts will all match up with the 307 if the 72.

In my 72 it is screwed to the firewall above the distributor. It has a post sticking straight out of it with many wires connected to the post and the wires connected to the underside of it which are the horn connections.

They will fit, but they will look stupid as hell. Keep in mind the 1972 Cutlass came stock with 14" or 15" wheels. Anything bigger than 18" tends to look really, REALLY stupid on older cars like the '72 Cutlass.
