You should try to find some good reference books. The library will have books that illustrate some of the common medals for the US. One good site to go for US Military items is www.usmilitariaforum.com . It is a forum to ask questions about US military items (no foreign stuff). You can read the old forums and find many many photos of examples of badges, etc. There are other commericial sites that sale replacement badges and pins. These sites usually have photos of the items that will allow you to identify them. Each regiment and individual unit had a pin designed specific to that unit. It is called a Distinguished Unit Insignia (DUI). There are thousands of these and some times the designs changed over the years from WW2 to present day. There is an organization that studies these: American Military Insignia Collectors (I believe). They have a website but they usually charge to identify the pin unless you can find someone who will do help you for free. The above website is also good at identifying these DUI's.

What is the value of German Iron Cross 1914?

Every WW2 German badge had a swastika on it somewhere. There were some badges that had a large one in the center. But the value will depend on exactly the badge and its grade. Also, many German medals and militaria are reproduced so you have to ensure it is authentic. If the owner can trace it's ownership back to about 1960's then it is most likely original. A good site to help identify the badge is found by searching "axis history".

Are there US medals re-strikes?

Answer I would say No. However, there are medals that I consider to be copies. A copy is a medal that was made by an unauthorized company using their own dies for after market sale. Meaning there are several companies that will sale reproduction military badges and medals.
