Two popular resources are Process Explorer (software) and Process Library (website). These will help you identify the purpose of all running processes, and if they are critical to the operation of your computer.

Another way is if the user by which the process is running is "system" "local service" or "network service" then it is SUPER important and ending it would cause something bad and you don't want that.

A short note:

Keep in mind that all processes whose user-name is SYSTEM,LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE those processes are absolute must run process. Never try to shut them down or your computer may restart or shutdown to stop that process. Processes which are under your local username are process run when either log on or start a program, you can kill those process.
