You don't. The idle speed is determined by the on board computer and the idle speed control (ISC).
where is backup switch located on a 63 thunderbird
possible cause of high idle could be that your idle contol switch / valve has carbon build up on it. remove and clean with carburetor cleaner. let it dry completely before re-installing it. idle should come down if not it has probably gone bad and need to be replaced.
The Idle may be set to low, The Idle switch may be broke, or your power braking could be messed up go to a good macanic they will know.
FI vehicles generally have a IDLE SPEED MOTOR or IDLE SPEED VALVE etc. ( different names) which controls idle speed. These are subject to carbon build up on the shaft and can stick open causing this problem. Find yours ( ask FORD parts dealer to print out the location)and remove it and soak it in some SEA FOAM marine additive. If that does not work, you will need to replace it. If expensive, consider a salvage yard part to save money.
idle speed controll or tps throttle sensor
Sounds like a HORRIBLE vacume leak. check all vacume lines to see if broken, rotten or not hooked up. If nothing found... adjust idle speed
Computer controlled not adjustable
The IAC (idle air control) at the throttle body is usually the problem.
attached to the brake pedal up under the dash.
The fast idle-speed on a 1994 Nissan D21 pickup is adjusted by turning the screw on the side of the throttle body. It increases the speed of the engine when the vehicle is idle before completely warming up.
