i read that u have to remove the water pump..and that is really expensive

You do have to remove the water pump but as long as you do it your self it is not that expensive except the distributor itself. you can use the old water pump again as long as it works. You have to take the breather off the nose of the intake, then jack up the car (and put jack stands under it), remove the fans (if you have never taken out the fans it is a little hard the first time) there are two ways to remove fans the first is the hard way but the fastest if you can manage it.

Fan removal:

The fan is held to the radiator by clips that simply slide down into place push up on the fans and it comes lose take a straight edge screw driver and take the pig tails loose then pry the fans down side by side until it is out. easy but long way there are four 10mm bolts holding each individual fan in its place take the four bolts and the fans will come out no problem.

Water pump removal:

there are 6 bolts holding the water pump on. depending on the model of car if you have to take the air pump bracket off. 94-97 has a bracket for the air pump that holds the air pump for the smog system this bracket has two bolts and one nut (should be 9/16) the nut is on a bolt that holds your water pump remove the air pump by the three 10mm bolts that hold it then remove the bracket after this you are free to remove the water pump 3 bolts on each side 9/16 then remove all of your hoses and pull the water pump straight off. try to keep it as straight as possible until it breaks free because it is operated by a cog that is connected to the block of the engine and we would not want to break that. after this you are all most done.

crank pulley removal:

three 5/8 bolts hold the pulley on the crank take them loose and use a gear puller to remove it this gives you full and free access to the distributor aka optispark. mark plug wires so you will know where they go you can mark them by cylinders or by order just so you know how they go (the car will not start with even one cross wire) then three 3/8 bolts hold optispark in place remove them and gently pull it straight out of the block and it is removed.

the expensive part:

A/C Delco optispark is recommended almost any other brand will not run the car properly (it is up to you but don't say I didn't tell you) I would hate to go through this whole procedure again because I didn't put a new A/C Delco on it just saying. you can buy one at the dealership $700 advanced autoparts $600 or where I get mine on line summit racing, ebay or other you can usually find them for around $450

I hope this has been helpful
