Laptops are meant to be used on the go, and for students and business professionals alike they're an essential part of life. Unfortunately, most laptop batteries lose their battery life over time, so replacement is necessary if you don't want to keep it plugged in all the time or purchase a new laptop. In this how-to, you'll learn the easy process of replacing a battery in your laptop.

Instructions

1.Determine what laptop battery to buy. What battery you buy depends on the manufacturer of your laptop, as well as the model number for your laptop. Write down both pieces of information.

Go to the manufacturer's web site (e.g. HP, Dell, IBM etc.) and then type in the model number for your laptop. This should now tell you what laptop batteries are compatible with your laptop.

Purchase the battery that fits your laptop, either from a local store, your manufacturer's web site or a web site online. You may see two different batteries for your laptop--a 6-cell and a 12-cell battery. The difference between the two is the amount of battery life you'll get per charge. The 6-cell batteries generally can run a laptop for 2 1/2 to 3 hours per charge, whereas 12-cell batteries generally can run a laptop for 4-5 hours per charge.

Shut down your laptop and flip it over. Locate the battery compartment. If you're not sure where it is, check your computer's manual or the manufacturer's website.

Press the button to eject the battery from the battery compartment. Some laptops have a button to either pull or push to eject the battery.

Keep or properly dispose of the old battery. Some people like to keep their old laptop batteries as a back-up, whereas others want to get rid of them. If you want to get rid of the battery, take it to an electronics recycling place rather than throwing it in the trash.

Insert the new laptop battery, checking the instructions provided with the laptop battery. The new battery should firmly slide into place--if it doesn't, then you've purchased the wrong battery for your laptop.

Plug in the laptop and turn it on. Once the laptop has fully booted up, you should see the laptop battery charging (the icon is on the bottom right of the screen). If it is, then the battery has been installed correctly. If it's not, or you see a big red X over the battery icon, then the battery is either faulty or incompatible with your laptop.
