The number of neutrons in an element is determined by subtracting the atomic number from the Atomic Mass number rounded to the nearest whole number. On the other hand, very few atoms are abnormal and have a different amount of neutrons than other atoms of the same element. These are called isotopes and are indicated by a number following the element symbol (eg. C-14). This is a radioactive isotope of carbon that has six protons based on the atomic number and two more neutrons than normal--8. (8+6=14). Finally, the reason that the atomic mass units end in decimals is that this is just an average weight. The amount of neutrons in an element will depend on the amount of protons (which is the same as the amount of electrons) and the atomic mass of the element.

As the sum of both neutrons and protons in an element equals the atomic mass, then we can say:

Neutrons = atomic mass - protons

For example, the element Chromium has an atomic mass of 52, and has 24 protons. We can now figure out it's amount of neutrons from the above equation. Therefore:

Neutrons = 52-24

= 28

So Chromium has 28 neutrons

Another example is Mercury, which has an atomic mass of 201 and contains 80 protons. Thus, Neutrons = 201 - 80

= 121

look at the Periodic Table and in the top corner of the element you want there's a number wich says how many protons there are in the element. The number of nutrons are equal to this to eliminate a positive charge. (static electricity)


as we all are well aware of this fact that the atomic mass of an element is equal to number of protons plus number of neutrons present in a nucleus, so in order to find neutron we simply subtact number of protons by atomic mass.

ATOMIC MASS= NO. OF PROTONS + NO. OF NEUTRONS

NO. OF NEUTRONS= ATOMIC MASS - NO. OF PROTONS

You have to subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. The atomic number is the total number of protons in the element and the atomic mass is the total number of protons and neutrons in the element.
