you may hear thumps from direction of suspension.the ride will be rougher than it should it will affect steering easiest way to test is :- front shock example push down on fender on side you think may be bad then let go so as vehicle will return to normal height if vehicle returns with more than one movement the shock is bad also get under vehicle and check to see that busshing where shocks are mounted are not flogged out this will also give impression of bad shocks,but is a lot cheaper to fix
