I'm a girl and what I can tell you is to be careful. If she likes you she will indeed look at you (even if its for less than a second) and if you want to make her feel comfortable you should smile or say "hi" in return. Girls can get slightly confused when a guy doesn't share a look or avoids eye contact but if you do look, don't stare. Another thing to watch for is how she acts around you. She'll try to base the conversation on you and will constantly smile and laugh (which is usually triggered by you sharing eye contact and doing the same thing). Also listen to her. Sometimes a girl's voice will get slightly higher and in some cases she may even try and speak quietly to see if you're paying attention to her words. Another thing is her image. A girl can feel very self-conscious around a boy she likes and will tend to look for appreciation of her appearance through eye contact and compliments. Focus compliments on her face and not so much her figure and be casual about it. Some girls may want their figures admired but it can pressure them when it comes to a more intimate relationship because they feel they have to remain skinny (this can be a bit stressful).
Finally, she will tell a mutual friend about you and how she feels. It may be a secret but eventually she'll want you to know so she can examine your reaction. Be sure to see how her closest friends are around you. They will tend to look back and forth at their friend and you and usually stay quiet.
