The only way that you can verify that you do indeed have food poisoning is if a doctor diagnoses it through lab tests. Different people will exhibit a variety of symptoms which are dependent upon the causative organism or toxin. See Related Links.

Many people will have a minor bout and call it stomach flu or indigestion.

Unfortunately, people will also blame the last thing they ate - which isn't always the culprit.

If you've ever gotten sick after eating a meal, and you were feeling perfectly fine up to that point, then you know what it's like to have a food borne illness.

This could happen during a trip to Mexico, or it could happen at home. Regardless, it's the same principle - you ate something that was contaminated.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are common symptoms of food borne illness. They may start within 30 minutes after eating and may last for a couple of days or more. Usually you'll recover just fine after a few days. However, that all depends on what type of bacteria gets you and how old you are when got sick.

Food borne illnesses come in several shapes and sizes. For example, if your hamburger is not adequately cooked then you risk getting exposed to the bad strain of E. coli bacteria. (There is good E. coli too, which everyone already has in their digestive tract.) E. coli can cause severe illness, especially in the very young and very old

But why can people get away with eating rare steak? The reason that people don't often get sick from eating a rare steak is that the exterior of the steak is seared. This is likely where any bacteria would be and the high heat will kill the bacteria. However, hamburger is ground beef. The bad bacteria, which was most likely originally on the exterior of the beef product, could have been ground into the hamburger along with the beef. If you don't cook the entire thing then you don't kill the bacteria. There are still risks in eating rare steak, but it's not as high as eating undercooked beef.

There have been many cases of E. coli food poisoning over the last several years, and it's not always hamburger. Lettuce, spinach and other produce can also be exposed to E. coli when they are not handled in a sanitary manner. This is why it is recommended that you wash fruits and vegetables, especially if you are going to eat them raw.

Another example of food borne illness is salmonella. Salmonella is generally from uncooked or undercooked egg products. The salmonella is killed with cooking, but survives in raw egg products. Mayonnaise products such as potato salad are common sources of food borne illness, but it's not because of the mayo. It is because it's often left out all day in the heat at a picnic, and bacteria find that kind of environment perfect for growing.

Food borne illness can happen to anyone, even if you taken precautions. But the more you do to prevent it, the less chance you'll have of getting sick. Wash your hands before you eat or touch your food. Wash your produce. Cook your meat. And be very careful when traveling in countries known to have a high risk for food borne illness. Drink only bottled water in such situations. And if you get sick, seek medical attention. Sometimes you have no option but to wait it out, but it's important to find out from your doctor if it's something that requires treatment.
