Remove the thermostat from vehicle. Heat up a pot of water on the stove, insert thermometer in the water along with the thermostat, be sure to fill pot of water to cover thermostat. When temp reaches operating level (180 / 195 ) should be able to visually see thermost open. Get tongs and pull thermostat out of water. When it cools down you should see it close.
If the engine is overheating, the thermostat is stuck closed. If the heater is not putting out enough hot air the thermostat is stuck open. Change the thermostat as a normal part of maintenance when changing coolant.
If the thermostat is stuck open, the engine will never warm up to proper temperature.
A thermostat can be stuck open or closed. If the engine runs to cool it is stuck open. If the engine is running hot it is stuck closed. If you don't have these problems you should'nt have to change it.
If the stat is stuck open, your car will slowly overheat and not reach normal operating temperature, if it is stuck closed it will overheat very quickly.
One Coolant Hose is hot and thew other is cold...
If your engine takes a much longer time for the thermostat heat guage to reach its required level of operatiing temperature then the thermostat may be stuck in the open position which means that it will need to be replaced.
The answer is...it depends. A majority of cars have the gasket going on top of the thermostat. You will have to look for things like a cutout for the thermostat to fit in and such to really know or you might even have to pull out the repair manual.
i am a female and know nothing about cars except gas and drive
It depends on the symptoms. If you get poor heat from the heater and the temp gauge doesn't go up to normal, the thermostat may be stuck open. If the temp gauge reads hot quickly and the engine overheats, it may be a stuck closed thermostat. There could be many other reasons the engine is overheating and many are costly. Replacing the thermostat is a good place to start because the cost is minimal.
usually, after you start your vehicle, if it doesn't take long for the temp. to rise past the normal position, and your car is full of water. It's probably the thermostat faulty. terry.stone21@yahoo.com.
If your temperature gauge on the dash reads higher or lower than it should, the thermostat could be bad. If the stat is stuck open the engine won't warm up and if the stat is stuck shut the engine will be too hot. If you doubt it at all replace it. It does so much and costs so little.
There is no sure way to know until you take the thermostat out and check it. After removing the thermostat, you can test it by submerging it slowly, with a tool in boiling water. You can then see the thermostat open up. If it does, this is not your overheating cause. If it does not, you need to purchase a new one. Install the new one and you will find out if that was the problem.
