The answer is...it depends. A majority of cars have the gasket going on top of the thermostat. You will have to look for things like a cutout for the thermostat to fit in and such to really know or you might even have to pull out the repair manual.

To Replace the thermostat if you follow the water pump toward the back of the engine. The thermostat housing is located right before all of the coolant hoses go into the water pump it is held onto the water pump with 3 bolts with 10mm bolts. the best way is to remove the three bolts and take out the old thermostat and scrape away the old gasket material. then take gasket and new thermostat and put rtv silicone around the top of the thermostat ( I recommend using the 1 minute silicone) then slip the thermostat into thermostat housing. Next take gasket and coat with silicone on both sides of gasket. then slip it in and finger tighten the three bolts. let set for 1 minute or 12 to 24 hours if 1 minute silicone is not used then torque down to appropriate specs don't overtighten

How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier?
I just did mine. It is located at the front of the engine under the alternater. You will need to open the peacok to drain the radiator fluid. I believe that is located at the lower drivers side of the radiator. Where the thermostat is located will be two bolts, 10mm I believe. remove these two bolts. The two metal pcs will now come apart. Take out the thermostat. Clean the two metal halves where you removed the thermostat from (from dirt and debree). You will need a small round gasket the just goies around the thermostat piece itself. There is no paper gasket needed. Put this small gasket around the thermostat, and I also used some high temp gasket maker also. Putting this just around the rubber gasket the you installed around the thermostat. Now insert the thermostat, level and straight in. Connect the two halves together (lever and straight) and tighten the two bolts. Put in new coolant and ready to go.

The thermostat goes in the recess of the manifold . The gasket should be glued to the thermostat housing. Silicone sealer makes a metal surface slippery, so if used, should be done sparingly. Let the two adhere and install the housing to the intake. Do not over tighten as a bolt could possibily break. BE SURE THE SURFACE IS CLEAN of the old gasket.

Thermostat is located in the aluminum housing attached to the water pump. You can easily find it by following the lower radiator hose out of the radiator and going into this housing. There are two bolts that secure the housing to the water pump that once removed will reveal the thermostat. Make sure that you orient the thermostat with the little jiggly thing at the top and use a new rubber gasket around the perimeter of the new thermostat.

it took me 3 times to get it right without leaking .there's hardly any room ..the springs on the thermostat go in the housing of the part u unbolted ..i call it goose neck..or housing..prep it ..first put the thermostat in with the little nipple thing at the top that's on the thermostat...put it in the housing..coat the gasket with sealer on the side that goes over the thermostat put it on over the thermostat let it set up for over an hour . i put some sealer on the thermostat also just to hold it in place around the edges that meet the gasket ..cause the two times before that i installed it ...it would always fall off and get dirt and oil on the sealant not good.after it's set up put the sealer on the other side of the gasket that meets the engine block... than carefully turn it to where the port for the holes goes on make sure that's at the top and weasel it under the AC line ..try not to bump it at all.... then install it..hope that helps..P.S don't forget to bleed it after your done to get the air out of the coolant system

Locate the top hose comimg out of radiator, this hose will run to the Thermostat housing, ENSURE YOU BUY THE CORRECT THERMOSTAT from auto shop, thermostat should come with gasket (enquire at shop if not purchase one), ensure car is cold, remove the hose, remove the two nuts holding thermostat housing on, remove old thermostat (take note of how old thermostat is fitted, a useful tool for this is a digital camera, so that when you fit the new one you can assure yourself that it is correct), clean both surfaces, place in new thermostat, gasket, refit thermostat housing, refit top radiator hose top radiator and overflow tank with correct coolant (if required or water), start car and ensure no leaks are present, take car for a trip to ensure it gets to running temperature but doesn't go over, pop bonnet and check for leaks again, if none all should be ok.
