Answer 1

After a drive if you check your battery with a volt meter and if it is less than 12volts then your alternator my not be charging, to check just the battery, put a volt meter on the battery and have someone start the car while you watch the volt meter, if the meter drops more than 1volt then your battery is no good, the starter is a bit harder as you have to find it first then put your test leads on the neg & pos leads of the starter, then turn the key, if you get battery voltage at the starter then the starter is no good, if you do not get battery voltage then you have to check the starter solenoid Hope that helps, FROM THE #1 LEDZMEN.

In my area [SE Texas] we have many auto parts stores. The three major national chain stores [Advance, Autozone, and O'Reilly] all of have handheld portable test equipment with which they can check my vehicle's battery, electrical system, and charging system.

They do this as a FREE service. It's good for the customer as it helps him/her in diagnosing their problems, AND it helps the store by creating good will AND to sell more parts.

If you don't have a VOM [Volt-Ohm meter as referred to in answer one], or you don't feel secure in knowing how to properly use it, then check [by telephone] with your local auto parts stores to find one who will do the testing for you.

My suggestion is to make sure that you have a good connection between your starter and your battery. Is the starter even functioning? If not, it is probably a bad starter, a bad battery, a bad fusible link for the starter, a blown fuse, or just a bad connection. Dead battery? Bad starter? Bad/dirty connections on battery cables? If you know the battery is good, you have to listen when the key is turned. if there is an audible "click" when you turn the key its mostlikely the starter.
