If the vehicle can be made to run, it would indicate an alternator rather than starter problem (obviously), but connecting a voltmeter to the battery terminals while the engine is running about 2000 RPM and getting a voltage reading of less than 12 Volts or much more than 14 or 15 Volts would indicate a faulty alternator. If the engine cannot be made to run, either or both the starter and alternator must be removed for testing. Most auto part stores can test these for you, usually for free (especially if they think you'll be buying replacements from them).
