To predict the formula of an ionic compound you have to learn names, symbols and charges, of the most important ions.Then it is very easy to predict the formula. For example: Predict the formula of zinc chloride? Solution: The charge of Zinc(Zn) is +2 ,and the charge of chlorine(Cl) is -1, so we take the charge of zinc and put it at the number of atoms of Chlorine(Cl), same we do with the charge of chlorine. And we will get the formula ZnCl2

Examples:

Lead(II)nitrate: Pb+2 NO3-1 ----> Pb(NO3)2

Aluminium bromide: Al+3 Br-1 -----> AlBr3

and so on.....

For simple molecules with a central atom linked to other atoms you can use VSEPR theory, Valence shell electron pair theory, (see link). This gives reasonable estimates of shape. For larger molecules knowing typical bond angles and bond lengths models can be built. These can be physical ball and stick models or you can use "space filling shapes" which show where the electron density mainly resides. Also there are computer programs. This helps in understanding and may give insights into molecular reactivity. The shape a complex molecule takes can be affected by external factors, such as the environment in the solid or in the solvent.

To predict the molecular shape you have to consider the following:

1. You must count the available bonding electrons each atom has

2. The shapes of molecules are determined by the repulsion between electron pairs in the outer shell of the central atom. Both bond pairs and lone pairs must be considered.

3. Lone pairs repel more than bond pairs.

s. Determine central atoms and terminal atoms

There are six basic shapes:

1. linear

2. angular

3. trigonal pyramidal

4. trigonal planar

5. tetrahedral

6. trigonal bi-pyramidal

The objective of every atom in a Lewis structure is to have an octet, or eight electrons.

The formula is based on the chemical composition of the molecule.

How do you identify and kinds of atoms in a given compound based n its chemical formula?

The chemical formula is representative for a molecule and give indication about the chemical composition.

Is formulae used to describe molecules or to name compounds?

A chemical formula would describe a molecule by its constituent parts. The chemical name, however, also is based on chemical formula, and will also describe the molecule.

What is the chemical formula for 163.26g of C11H17N?

C11H17N is a chemical formula. Chemical formulas are not based on the quantity of the substance.

What are molecular formulas based on?

They are based on the number of atoms in a molecule of a substance but also sometimes on the configuration into ions. For example, methyl alcohol (methanol) is CH3OH, not CH4O, because the molecule is formed by the bonding of a methyl ion (CH3+) with a hydroxyl ion (OH).

What type of formula is based on the actual number of atoms that comprise a molecule of that compound?

This is called an empirical formula.

What is importance of naming chemical formula?

A compound is a substance made up of a definite proportion of two or more elements. A chemical formula tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound. It contains the symbols of the atoms of the elements present in the compound as well as how many there are for each element in the form of subscripts

How do you know if a covalent bond will form given a molecular formula?

This is based upon the chemical characteristics of the elements that are present within the molecular formula.

What type of carbon based molecule are DNA and RNA?

A carbon based molecule is a polymer. Edit: A carbon based molecule does not have to be a polymer, although some polymers are carbon based. For example methane - CH4 is carbon based and not a polymer. Carbon based molecules are called organic compounds.
