The split is not critical. If you're getting an adequate flow rate through your filter, then you're good. If the skimmer can clear the surface of the pool within 30 to 60 minutes after turning on the filter, you're fine.

I have two side skimmers and a bottom drain i can't seem to get the correct suction to use on my vacuum hose?

lift out the skimmer basket there should be a floating diverter with a flap that closes off suction. some skimmer baskets are rotated to do the same thing. insert your hose into the other skimmer. turn off suction to the main drain if you need more suction.

How do you get rid of the brown stuff at the bottom of the pool that goes right though the vacuum?

Use a suction vacuum plugged into your skimmer to vacuum to waste.

What valves do you leave open when cleaning pool?

You should have two valves: one for the skimmers and another for the bottom drain. Close the valve to the bottom drain. One of your skimmers should have a rotating disc which will cover the intake at the bottom of the skimmer intake hole. Rotate the disc. In this manner all the suction from the pool pump will be at the one remaining skimmer. Attach your cleaning hose to this remaining skimmer while vacuuming the pool.

How do you unclog the bottom drain of a in ground pool if you can't find the junction of the skimmer and the main drain?

Depends how the pool was plummed. If you have a dedicated main drain line, or you share a main drain line and a skimmer line. Both are suction lines to the pump, meaning they will go into the front of the pump. If you have several valves on the front of the pump, and hopefully they are labeled you could try to shut all of them except the main drain and use what is called a drain king. It hooks to a waterhose and swells inside the pipe forcing water in the opposite direction. If you dont have any valves on the front of the pump ,chances are you share suction with the skimmer. check the inside bottom of the skimmer. Main drain may be plummed to skimmer bottom.

How do you turn on and use the floor drain to filter and isolate the skimmer filters?

On the pool I take care of, before the pump (suction side) there is a large 3 position valve. To the left is bottom drain, middle is all 3 and to the right is the 2 skimmer baskets. You will have to check to see which one controls which on your pool but is simple to check, turn all the way one way and stick your hand into one of the skimmer baskets and feel for suction.Answ:: Most newer pools have a "valve assy." of sorts at the bottom of the skimmer. It is either made of plastic or brass. This rotates in one direction to either increase or decrease the suction at the skimmer. It really does not totally shut off the main drain.Other type skimmers have a system that uses a "float valve" at the bottom of the skimmer. Removing this unit from the skimmer will reveal two holes at the bottom of the skimmer. Looking down into the skimmer from the deck side of the pool ~ the hole closest to you would be the direct link to the pump. This is the port in which you would connect the vac hose. The other one is connected to the main drain and all go back to the pump from the bottom of the skimmer. The "float's" purpose is to prevent the skimmer from sucking air in the event the water level got too low. It has a floating stopper inside. If your set up has only one port at the bottom of the skimmer then you most likely have a brass or PVC valve situated just before the pump inlet. Sometimes there are multiple valves and are usually not marked as to what they control. You just have to work with a partner to find out which one does what and where.k

What direction does a skimmer weir face Does the lip go on top or bottom and does it face the skimmer or pool?

Does it go from the top or bottom

On a 3 way valve for inground swimming pool why does pressure decrease when on skimmer only but is ok when both skimmer and bottom position selected?

That piece of plumbing may have some blockage in it or there may be a restriction of some sort on that line. There may also be a leak in that side of the plumbing. Is there any air coming back to the pool when in this position? If so that is the cause. Fix the suction leak and try again. The 3 way may not be positioning completely over that port. Or it could be that the three way valve does not have the 3rd port open. If the 3 way is prior to the pump, then one port goes to the bottom of the skimmer, the other goes to one of the main drain ports. When your skimmer has reduced "suction" (not pressure) it is then the 3 way may be drawing from both skimmer and main drain at the same time. You only have "pressure" after the pump and at the filter. Before the pump then it is considered suction. Or the 3 way may be plumbed or labeled wrong. Also, in another instance, with the valve in the skimmer position - it could be drawing from more than one skimmer. I suspect the latter answer.

Where do you attach the vacuum hose to vacuum the pool?

Attach the hose to the side skimmer basket with a special plastic adaptor that fits in your size skimmer. Types of skimmers: Brands: Purex, Anthony, American Products, Pentair, Hayward are major names. Hum, not inside the skimmer basket but under it. There you will find either a disc type object much like a flying saucer. Then under that there will be 2 holes. The one, if you are looking down into the skimmer from the deck side of the pool, to back side of the skimmer - 0 0 < that one - closest to you is the suction part of the skimmer. Your hose is pushed into this hole after filling the hose with water. The "adapter" is another type skimmer as stated above that you can rotate to the left or right to achieve optimum skimmer suction. With a single hole skimmer - that hole is the suction for the vac. You just have to plug the second skimmer if you have one. Still, there is another with a hole in the side wall of the skimmer near the bottom of the skimmer. This is also the vac hole. With it you plug yoyr vac into it and then close a valve that controls the main drain. You have to remember when you are finished vacing pool you then open the main drain valve. The latter one is a quite old system made by or used by Anthony Pools. k

What is the best recommended repair for skimmers leaking on a gunite pool?

Is the skimmer plastic? Does it have a black bottom? If so, there is a kit for this. Check out black bottom skimmer repair - search.

What is the device called that can alternate between the pool skimmer and the vacuum?

I think you are referring to a Jandy valve. The valve diverts water from the main drain to the skimmers. When vacuuming, turn the valve so it is pointing to the skimmer inlet pipe. OR It could also be called a diverter valve located at the bottom of the skimmer depending on the age of the skimmer. k

Of the two holes in my skimmer one has suction with the pump on and one does not have ANY Is this right I can never get enough suction to use my vacuum hose and I'm sure i have all the air out when?

Most likely your skimmer has two holes being either for pumping from the bottom or the rear depending on how the plumbing is configured. Have a look at your pump with the vacuum hose plugged in. Is the basket got air trapped in the top? Unplug the hose does the air go away? Chances are if this is the case the seal in your pump needs replacing.
