In the case of a worn or old bearing there will be a humming or loud "whur" sound emanating form the front of your vehicle. While this is ONE symptom of a bearing needing replacing it is also a symptom of some other conditions such as a "dry"(no lubricant on) CV joint or worn teeth on an axle. The first step is to check and see if there is any "wiggle" in your tire while it is jacked up.(both passenger and driver sides must be up and stable or the tilt of the car may be deceptive) you may also be able to tell by the way a tire is worn if the sound has persisted for a long enough time (usually 3 weeks or more)as the tire will be abnormally worn down all over (one side worn may just be an alignment or balance issue) Your best bet to see if a bearing may need replacing is to find out if/when the bearing were last replaced and check the mileage as most bearings last 75k+ miles unless improperly installed
