When it breaks. Failing that check the users service manual.
I know that my BMW 645 CI 2004 has a chain. Not a timing belt. If you have a chain then you change it only if you here noise (rattle) as chain gets longer over the time. Usually you don't have to change on normal car but you may change on 645 as there is a lot of power. You can check if you have chain or belt by opening a cap where you fill your engine oil.
If you have to use jumper cables to turn on your car then it's time to change your timing belt. Although, it might be a hassle, remember that in the long run you are saving valuable time.
change timimg belt its much cheaper
It is not too difficult to change a serpentine belt on a Northstar V8. A person needs to be able to maneuver around car parts and have no rush for time.
as far as i know you cant tell its bad until it finally snaps and if that happens you could be waving goodbye to your engine. check with your car manufacturer when your belt should be changed. an outlay of around 350 for a belt change is better than possibly the end of your car.
Start with a full tune up. Change Fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, if you have over 60k on the car time to change that timing belt (change belt and pullies also a good time to change water pump) and dont forget your serpentine belt.

The engine timing marks are on the timing belt of the car. It lets you know when it is time to replace the belt.

if u look at the teeth on the belt, u can telll. if the teeth has crack and the belt is breakin lose or any of that, its time for another belt. little as it looks, it has alot of effect on your car
