How do you know when the catalytic converter is giving out on your 2004 Chevy Suburban?

I just had mine replaced on an 2002 suburban....didnt take long to figure out what was wrong, it started making a really loud rattle and knocking sound you can bang on the upper exhaust and hear it. there is one one each side
