A failing U-joint will usually show itself as a rhythmic thumping that increases with the speed of the wheels (not the engine.) It is usually accompanied by a clunk or clank when shifting between reverse and drive.It could also make a metal on metal screeching sound that will also increase with speed. I've seen it both ways.
Jack the car up so the drive wheels are free to rotate. Do not engage the parking brake. Grab the drive shaft and shake it. It should be rock solid. If you can rattle it, a U-joint is bad.
