Female fighting fish are usually the drab colored ones (browns and greys.) while the males are usually the flashy reds and blues.
There are some more specific things but in general that will do to tell the two genders apart.

∙ 13y agoThe males have large flowing finnage and will show off (square up) to a mirror image of themselves the females do not square up or have the big fins.
People these days know nothing -_- I knew the answer to this when I was five. Males have longer tails/fins than the females. Males also will create bubble nests or flare (they flare more than females usually). If you are talking about plakat bettas, it is harder to tell. Check the female for an egg-spot but sometimes young males will apear to have this. Male plakat bettas will show off to his reflection. Males will kill male bettas. Female bettas can live with each other in groups of 5 or more. A male and a female betta cannot be housed together or they will kill each other.

∙ 14y agoHe needs to be about 9 to 12 months old and in prime condition and she needs to be obviously chubby with ova. Placing the female in an adjoining tank is a good idea. If he can see her he should flash at her and start to build a nest. Minimum tank size for spawning Bettas is 18x10x10 inches. Temp should be between 78F and 80F. Please remove the female as soon as spawning has been completed otherwise she will be killed.
