Loss of power, check engine light on, poor fuel mileage, possibly bad smell, blowing sound under hard acceleration, and may be hard to start.
i got estimate of 600 $
Plugged fuel or air filter? Plugged catalytic converter?
i think it's something like 3-5 years. if not have a look on the website u got the catalytic car from and that should tell you.
I had an 85 cj-7 doing the same thing. i changed the catalytic converter and problem solved. You may want to try it. The catalytic converter can become plugged or restricted.
Mine is only a 4 cyl. but husband just found it located between the muffler and the catalytic converter. I got a 97 grand am se V-6 3.1L and there are two o2 sensors on it. one before the catalyic converter and one after the catalytic converter.
The best way to fix this is to go to Auto Zone. They know everything about the car. Or you can take it to you local dealership or where you got it from and tell them what has happened to your car.
Only if it was sold in California. In 1974 all California cars had catalytic converters. In 1975, the rest of the country followed suit. If you've got the build sheet, you should be able to easily determine which dealership sold the car new and then you'll know if it should have a cat.
You got a problem with your catalytic converter potentially Might just be a dodgy sensor, though.
P0420, P0430 Catalyst efficiency failure The Oxygen sensors that are after the Catalytic converter monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Several codes can be for this. It is impossible to say what the code is. Try going to a auto parts store and having the code read and see what they say. Good luck. Brad. -I just had my O2 sensor replaced, the light came on again. I got the catalytic converters replaced the next day. The light just came on this morning after driving 200 miles without it being on. What else could it be, I don't know. Good luck though.
If you've got a lot of miles on that car, the most likely culprit is a clogged catalytic converter.
3. In the exhaust manifold on both sides of the motor has one built into it. The "left" and the "right". The 3rd is the plain run of the mill, everyones got one right before the muffler catalytic converter.
After 1975, the epa demanded that pollution control be implemented into cars...hence the catalytic converter, so yes, you need one, i am in the middle of installing one on mine because i got cited for out of date inspection. So if only they made our cars 2 years before 1975 and earlier do not need cats
