Start the engine and using a digital volt meter check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. If the alternator is good you will read from 13.5 to 15.5 volts DC.
I have a 1997 ford expedition that the alternator is not charging the battery. Had the alternator tested and it was good the battery is new. Cant find the fuse for the alternator does anyone know where it is?
When your battery does not get charge.
If you can get your vehicle started you can then un hook the battery while it is running and if your vehicle stays running then your alternator is good. If it stalls and dies as soon as you unhook the battery then the alternator is not good.If you can get your vehicle started you can then un hook the battery while it is running and if your vehicle stays running then your alternator is good. Don't know this cars specifics, but usually, if the alternator light is on in your dash (the battery symbol) it means that your alternator is not charging your battery or that your battery cannot hold a charge.
test the voltage on the battery first, then on the alternator. If its good then it could just be the diode in the alternator. I would suggest you replace it becuase eventually your alternator will die and the battery will not get charged leaving you stranded somewhere. It is possible to just be a battery but you wont know unless you have the battery tested. check the voltage on the battery and the alternator before you do anything else.
To test the alternator if funds are low, let the motor idle and remove the negative battery cable, if the motor dies its probably the alternator.
A new battery or one that tested good is in the vehicle and the car is still losing power. the alternator is what charges the battery while the vehicle is operating.
Turn car on remove positive battery terminal if car turns off alternator is bad
see this link How_can_you_tell_if_it's_your_battery_or_alternator_that's_bad
The battery light is letting you know that the alternator is not charging the battery. Check to see if alternator is any good. Also check to see if belt is hooked up.
A quick test I've always used is to start the car. Remove the neutral cable from the battery. If the car still runs your alternator is fine.
If your talking about cars... If you smell a burning smell, or your red battery light comes on then i would get your alternator checked out!
