Traditionally, bonfire parties usually start a little before dark. You get the fire going early so it isn't a "new fire" when people are starting to gather around it. There will be some embers and the larger logs will be going. Bonfires are usually pretty simple and casual affairs.

Follow all your common sense safety procedures. Have a shovel and a water source near by. Make sure there aren't any burn bans going on in your area. Everyone around the fire needs to be in shoes, not flips flops or sandals.

Throw all your drinks on ice in a cooler near where everyone is gathered. After night fall, it is nice not to have to go to far in the dark to get simple things like drinks.

Marshmallows. You need marshmallows. They may seem cliche, but whatever. Everyone likes them anyway. Make sure you have plenty of sticks or marshmallow roasters on hand. Palmetto branches are excellent for this if you have access to them. Cut all the fronds and points off with a pocketknife, and sharpen the end a bit.

Some other items that are good to have:

• Mosquito repellant
• Citronella candles
• Flashlights
• Logs big enough to sit on or plenty of lawn chairs
• Snacks that do not need a plate, like small bags of chips
• Depending on the crowd; beer, Smirnoff's, or other drink of that type
• Clear Christmas lights or rope lights
• If you are going to do a meal, do it earlier in the evening so when night falls, everyone can go chill by the fire. Cooking out is usually the way to go. Use paper plates and you can just throw them in the fire when you are done.
• Dryer lint, toilet paper tubes, shredded newspaper or some other quick kindling
• Smaller sticks to get your fire started
• Medium limbs to get the fire established
• Logs for the long burn
• Music, but away from the fire. Usually, people sitting at the actual fire are wanting to just hang out and talk. Loud music there would be a bit of a distraction .
