Going from some versions of Windows to Windows, you can enable the Messenger service and use the command "net send" from the command prompt.
The syntax is NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message
For example, "net send computer01 Don't forget that meeting at 5:00 PM today"
There may also be other third party programs to do this, but you will more than likely need to install the program on both computers.
