The Sonic Screwdriver is a tool used by Doctor Who. It was invented by writer Victor Pemberton for a 1968 production of Doctor Who and has been used in various forms ever since.
As can be expected, a tool that is as effective and versatile as this is protected and the design for the product is a closely guarded secret. Although there are a number of BBC prop makers that know the secret, none have ever spoken of the internal workings of the screwdriver despite pressure from many people to get the information.
Victor Pemberton, the original inventor also kept the secret for many years and we understand he has now left England. Although there is speculation that he left the country in order to escape from industrial espionage agents, this has not been proven. Pemberton has said that he moved to a warmer climate for purely personal reasons.
There are a number of manufacturers of products that claim to be a sonic screwdriver, they are sold in various toy and hobby stores. Experts claim that these products are nowhere near as effective as the original sonic screwdrivers. The replicas apparently cannot survive time travel and fail after a single temporal shift. For that reason, they should not be confused with the aerospace standard and temporal adjusted version used by Doctor Who himself.
