Direct current and alternating current (or AC and DC) are forms of how the electrons are travelling. DC is when the electrons are constantly going out one end through the circuit and then to the other terminal, even if it takes different paths to get there it is still DC. AC is rather complicated; it is when the electrons are still flowing but generally don't have to go in the same direction, this is caused when the machine generating electricity uses magnets spinning inside a coil. When this happens it connects to two sides of the spinning magnet. When it spins the N and S parts of the magnets touch each measuring area. It always flows from the S to the N, this causes it to go in the opposite direction when it switches sides, creating alternating current.
