How do you make your companions essential in fallout new Vegas pc?

Enter the console command screen
(on most keyboards this can be accessed using the ` key to the left of the 1 key, this may be different depending on what country the keyboard was made in)
Type "setessential" (without quotation marks) then leave a space, and input the companion's base id (which can be found easily on the fallout wiki). Then leave another space and put a 0 for nonessential or a 1 for essential. This command can be used on many NPCs besides companions.
