open the email and click "mark as unread"
click on the message tab at the top of the screen then scroll down and chose mark unread

After opening and reading your email, look for the action button on top and choose "Mark as Unread". This will make your email appear to be unopened.

unread messages are messages that have never been opened or mark as read basically not read
AOL seems to have a problem right now ~ the "mark as unread" option is no longer an available action but "keep as new" does not return the message subject to boldface. AOL help is useless because it tells you to select "mark as unread" from the action menu, which is hard to do when it's not there
the unread emails are in bold print
After you send a message, it automaticly sets it's self as sent. You can mark one or more message(s) by putting a check to the left of the message, under "More actions" you will find "Mark as read" (if it is unread), click that.
