Although I now live in Arizona, I remember that we used to heat the gutters and roof edges with electrical wiring that you could buy specifically for that purpose. Looks like the next technology is heat tapes. We also came to the conclusion that the deeper the overhang, the less of an issue the ice was. I believe this is because the effect of heated air rising from the inside is less of a problem.

∙ 14y agoYou can either add some table salt to the ice or you can go out and purchase the calcium chloride which is used commercially for icy roads and such, although the calcium chloride will work best.
